Davina and the Vagabonds: Stepping up, Stepping out and Running
If you know what a gramophone is, go ahead and skip to the next paragraph. If you don’t, you’ve likely seen one and have no idea what the hell it is. Look at this picture.
The machine the dog is giving a queer look, yeah, that’s a gramophone.
Davina and the Vagabonds produce the kind of sound I’d expect to hear out of one of those things. It’s the kind of infusion of jazz and blues elements you’d expect to hear in a basement bar that only hipsters now know about it. And if you asked said hipsters where you heard them, they’d probably tell you that you’ve never heard of the place. Hipsters be damned, Davina is good for listeners who love the sound from the days of Ella Fitzgerald and top 40’s Louis Armstrong. The songs are loaded with horns, piano keys and bass twangs. Last but not least of all, Davina’s voice is dynamite and the most virtuoso instrument featured in their numbers.
